Message Well, I finally got my hands on a timing light today....

I checked the timing with the TPS plugged in and it read at about 17.5....

I tried loosening the CAS to adjust it with the engine off but no deal. Wouldn't budge! The bolts did but the CAS will not turn at all.

Then I told my friend, who works at a friendly neighborhood smog shop and they said the book says to unplug the bottom TPS plug while checking the timing.

So I did and re-checked the timing. It came out as roughly advanced to 25 degress! I quickly shut off the engine and re-connected the CAS until I become better informed.

When I disconnected the TPS the engine did idle higher.

My car is a 1991 300ZX Twin Turbo all engine is stock except pop charger and ashspec computer with about 140K miles

Is it possible my harmonic balancer is lapped?
Why won't the CAS turn?
Is it safe to try to adjust the CAS with the engine running?
Am I doing this right? (Tons of stuff online doesn't mention disconnecting the TPS)
How would the advance timing effect the car?
This car in fact passed smog today with insane, and I mean INSANELY, good numbers.
The car stalled out on me at a light today for no apparent reason. (after I just passed smog)
The car rarely acts like it wants to die on the freeway while at speed (if I pump the gas a little, it seems to recoup. this has happened 2 times in the last 2 weeks. never before)

Any thoughts or advice are appreciated. I am elbow deep in the technicals of this car and working on it.
